Georgetown Tobacco is surrounded by some of the best universities in the nation: Georgetown, George Washington, American, Howard, Catholic, Gallaudet, and George Mason. Many of our staff members are current students or alumni of these exceptional schools.
Commencement season is upon us, and what better way to celebrate matriculation than with a fine cigar? Often newer to cigar smoking, these young grads come in seeking guidance on what to smoke, as do many of their friends and family when coming into town for graduation. Congratulations to the Class of 2023!
Rather than the typical rundown of mild cigars, we propose the following: A great list of celebratory cigars for your major— recommendations based on some of the most popular majors of students in the region.
What would the best choice be for a Religion major? How about International Politics??
Celebrations call for longer cigars (typically churchills) as you’ll have the time to enjoy them at that graduation party or hopefully over a little summer vacation before your next journey begins. Curious? Read on…
The Religion Major: All Saints Cigars- St. Francis Colorado Churchill
Catholic University and Georgetown Tobacco alum, Micky Pegg, created the All Saints brand and has received national acclaim and high ratings from multiple cigar publications. The Colorado wrapper brings softness and subtlety to the Nicaraguan binder and filler. With St. Francis’ commitment to the well being of animals and his concern for the poor, his work sets a strong example for these new grads.
The Business Administration Major: Davidoff Aniversario Double R
You’re probably off to start your first professional job with one of “The Big Four,” or heading to New York to work in any number of prestigious firms for a few years before starting your M.B.A. There’s no better way to mark the occasion than with an Aniversario Double R from Davidoff. As every business major knows, you can’t sacrifice quality to speed production, and Davidoff is the epitome of maintaining the highest standards. You may not be rubbing elbows with the people in the boardroom yet, but when you do, be sure you share what you thought of this cigar… It may just be the thing that keeps you in mind for that first promotion!
The Government Major: The Caucus Churchill- a Georgetown Tobacco exclusive
Georgetown Tobacco owner, David Berkebile, was President of our trade association- the International Premium Cigar and Pipe Retailers association (now known as the Premium Cigar Association) when he blended the Caucus. Working diligently to fight all of the harmful legislation, taxation and regulation that threatens our industry, David knew the importance of a caucus— bringing together people from all parties to pursue our shared goals. The fight is never over. Hopefully these new grads working in government will remember smoking a Caucus and lend a strong voice to protecting our rights to enjoy premium cigars and pipe tobacco. To learn more, watch our “Cigar Talk” interview with David during which he discusses how he blended the Caucus.
The English Literature Major: Romeo y Julieta Reserve Churchill
“O Romeo, Romeo, where for art thou Romeo?” Since you just graduated, maybe choose something else for the party and just enjoy this one while you’re rereading (or teaching!) this classic. Made in Honduras, this Nicaraguan and Honduran blend is complemented by a beautiful Nicaraguan wrapper. Perhaps it will inspire your own masterpiece!
The Fine Arts Major: Avo XO Maestoso
Avo Uvezian, creator of the cigars that bear his name, brought his love of music into everything he did. An accomplished jazz pianist and composer, Avo certainly hit the right notes with this blend. With Dominican tobaccos aged at least 6 years, the medium-bodied Maestoso has long been a staff favorite. May it inspire the class of 2023 to create with passion and experience all the beauty that a life lived enjoying cigars has to offer!
The International Relations Major: Padron 1964 Anniversary Diplomatico Natural
Negotiating peace in challenging regions of the world is a daunting task. What better way to ease tensions than sharing the love of a handmade premium cigar? Aptly named, the Padron 1964 Anniversary Diplomatico may be just what you need to nurture important international relationships. The hour you’ll spend together smoking this Nicaraguan puro with tobaccos aged four years is certainly one you’ll remember for years to come— especially if it bears fruit in your diplomatic mission!
Though it would be fun, we can’t represent celebratory cigars for every major in this post. Suffice it to say, there is a cigar for everyone. Whether the degree you’re receiving is your Bachelor’s, a Master’s or a PhD, you’ve earned the right to celebrate. Congratulations on a tremendous achievement! We look forward to being here for you to celebrate this moment and many others in your future as you embark on your next great journey.
